The journey begins with a scenic 10-hour drive from Kathmandu to Machha Khola, the starting point of the trek. As you leave the city behind, the road winds through villages, terraced fields, and lush landscapes, offering glimpses of the Himalayan foothills. Upon arrival, you’ll check into a guesthouse and rest for the night, preparing for the adventure ahead.
Throughout the trek, you'll stay in basic teahouses or guesthouses along the route. These offer simple rooms with basic amenities such as a bed, blankets, and pillows. Most guesthouses have communal dining areas where you can meet other trekkers and share meals. The rooms are often heated with stoves, and although the facilities are modest, they provide a comfortable environment after a long day of trekking.
The Manaslu Circuit and Annapurna Circuit trek is considered moderate to strenuous. The trek involves long trekking days (typically 5–8 hours) and includes two high-altitude passes: Larkya La (5160m) and Thorong La (5416m). These high-altitude sections can be physically demanding, and trekkers need to be in good physical condition. Acclimatization days are included in the itinerary to help reduce the risk of altitude sickness. Overall, it’s suitable for trekkers who have prior trekking experience or are in good health.
The best time for this trek is during spring (March to May) and autumn (September to November). During these seasons, the weather is generally stable with clear skies, which allows for the best views of the Himalayan peaks. The temperatures are also moderate, making trekking more comfortable. The monsoon season (June to August) should be avoided due to heavy rainfall, which can make trails slippery and increase the risk of landslides. Winter (December to February) can also be cold, with snow and freezing temperatures, making higher altitude trekking more challenging.
On average, you will be trekking for 5–8 hours per day. Some days, especially on higher-altitude sections such as the Larkya La Pass and Thorong La Pass, will require longer trekking hours (up to 10–12 hours). The trek is planned with gradual ascents to help with acclimatization and to avoid exhaustion. Trekking days may vary in length depending on the route, weather conditions, and your pace.
The trek offers a variety of local and international food. Dal Bhat (lentil soup with rice) is a staple, along with noodles, pasta, soups, momos (dumplings), and vegetarian dishes. Guesthouses typically offer hearty meals prepared with fresh ingredients. Vegetarian and vegan options are widely available. Some guesthouses also offer basic snacks like biscuits, tea, and coffee. Mineral water is available, but it’s recommended to purify your water using tablets or filters.
Packing for this trek requires attention to both high-altitude trekking and cold weather conditions. Essential items include:
Internet and mobile coverage are available in some of the larger villages like Manang, Samagaon, and Dharapani, but the signal can be weak or unavailable in remote areas. Most guesthouses offer Wi-Fi for a small fee. However, it’s best to be prepared for limited communication and inform your family or friends beforehand about your trek’s remoteness.
