The Annapurna Circuit trek route is the best mountain trek in the world. On this single trip, you will walk through green forests, cross a high desert, and climb over the famous Thorong La Pass (5,416m). You will also visit traditional Hindu and Buddhist villages along the way.

Very fit hikers can finish the standard 12-day trip, but it is often rushed and raises the risk of altitude sickness. The 21-day plan is much better for most people. It gives your body time to adjust to the height safely. You can relax, enjoy hot springs in Tatopani, and watch a beautiful sunrise at Poon Hill without feeling too tired.

This guide explains the full 21-Day Annapurna Circuit Map. You will learn the daily route, see simple height charts, and find out about required permits (ACAP and TIMS). This is your simple guide to a safe and amazing Himalayan adventure.

Why Choose the 21-Day Annapurna Circuit?

The standard 12-day Annapurna Circuit is a rush. It often means long, tiring walking days, a higher risk of altitude sickness, and a bumpy jeep ride at the end.

The 21-day version is different. It is a safe, enjoyable journey. The extra days are not wasted time; they are there to help you. You get a full rest day in Manang to let your body adjust to the thin air, which prevents altitude sickness. Instead of a rushed jeep ride, you walk through beautiful valleys, relax in Tatopani’s natural hot springs, and watch the famous sunrise at Poon Hill. You also get time to truly enjoy the culture in Kathmandu and Pokhara.

Take Mark, for example. He almost picked the shorter trip to save time. But when he felt a mild altitude headache, the extra rest day in Manang saved his trek. Later, watching the sunrise over the mountains became his favorite memory.

As Mark said, “The extra days didn’t just make the trip better, they made it possible.” Choose the Annapurna Circuit Trek 21-days trek to truly enjoy the Himalayas, not just survive them.

Annapurna Circuit Trek Overview

A scenic drive then takes you to Besisahar, where the trek officially starts. The trail then ascends through rugged terrain to Yak Kharka and High Camp, culminating in the challenging but deeply rewarding pre-dawn crossing of Thorong La Pass (5,416m). Your expert guide stays by your side to ensure a safe, supported descent to the sacred pilgrimage town of Muktinath.

Unlike shorter itineraries, this extended route features a scenic, gradual descent through the deep Kali Gandaki valley. You will explore the apple orchards of Marpha, relax your tired muscles in Tatopani’s natural hot springs, and trek through vibrant rhododendron forests to Ghorepani. An early morning hike to Poon Hill (3,210m) rewards you with a legendary sunrise over the Annapurna and Dhaulagiri ranges, followed by the final walk to Nayapul and a drive to the lakeside city of Pokhara. After a full day of relaxation and sightseeing there, you will enjoy a scenic drive back to Kathmandu.

Annapurna Circuit Trek Elevation Profile

The Annapurna Circuit elevation profile features a gradual ascent from subtropical lowlands (~800m) to the breathtaking Thorong La Pass at 5,416m (17,769 ft). This steady, week-long climb is intentionally designed to help your body adapt naturally to the thinning mountain air.

However, the AMS Risk Zone begins at Manang (3,540m) and extends to the pass, where oxygen levels drop by 50%. This makes the Day 9 acclimatization rest in Manang non-negotiable. Respecting this pause, pacing yourself, and staying hydrated are the absolute keys to a safe and successful crossing.

Accommodation During Trek

Your 21-day Annapurna Circuit trip mixes cozy mountain teahouses with nice city hotels. You will sleep in local teahouses for 15 nights on the trail. You will also stay in comfortable hotels in Kathmandu (4 nights) and Pokhara (2 nights) to rest well before and after your trek.

The mountain teahouses are simple but warm and welcoming. Your room will usually have two beds, a mattress, and thick blankets. We strongly suggest bringing your own sleeping bag to stay extra warm and clean, especially at high places where it gets very cold at night.

Bathrooms change as you go higher. In lower villages, you get normal showers. But high up in the mountains, bathrooms are basic and shared. There, the best and most common way to get clean is to buy a bucket of hot water. It is a simple but great way to warm up your tired muscles after a long day of walking!
