Landing at Tenzing-Hillary Airport is an adventure itself because the runway is short and sits on the edge of a mountain.
In Lukla, you meet your trekking team and porter. Then your trek begins! The trail goes gently downhill through pine forests. You cross a few hanging bridges over the loud Dudh Koshi River. After about 4 hours of easy walking, you reach the cozy village of Phakding.

Along the way, you cross several long suspension bridges that swing gently high above the river. It feels exciting and a little scary! The most famous one is the Hillary Suspension Bridge. Keep your eyes open for mountain animals and colorful birds.
The last part is a steep uphill climb of about two hours. Your legs will feel it, but at the top you get your first view of Mount Everest and Lhotse. Welcome to Namche Bazaar, the lively Sherpa capital of the Himalayas!

Your guide takes you on a morning hike to the Everest View Hotel at 3,880 meters. On a clear day, you can see Everest, Ama Dablam, and Lhotse. It is one of the most photographed views in Nepal. Then you hike back down for lunch.
In the afternoon, explore Namche. Visit the Sherpa Culture Museum, browse the gear shops, or enjoy apple pie at a famous local bakery.

Today you leave the busy Everest Base Camp trail and head toward the quiet Gokyo Valley. The path climbs steeply out of Namche through juniper and rhododendron forests, then opens into wide alpine meadows.
You pass through Mong La, a great spot to stop for hot tea and enjoy stunning views of Ama Dablam. From there, the trail drops down to Phortse Thanga and climbs again through open hillsides. The higher you go, the fewer trees you see.
By the time you reach Dole, you are above the treeline. The village is small, but the views of Kantega and Thamserku are amazing. Walk slowly and drink plenty of water.

  • Distance: 11km
  • Walk: ~6 Hours
  • Altitude: 4,438m
  • Accommodation: Teahouse
  • Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner
Day 07: Dole to Machhermo (4,470m) | 7km | 4hrs

Today is a shorter walking day, which feels good after yesterday’s long climb. But you are still going higher, so keep a slow and steady pace. Drink water often and never rush.
The trail continues north along the valley. You pass two tiny settlements called Lhabarma and Luza, where only a few families live all year. The land here is wide open with almost no trees, and you get big views of the peaks and glaciers around you.
After a few hours, you arrive at Machhermo. The teahouses here are warm and welcoming. Your guide may tell you the famous story of a Yeti sighting reported here in 1974. It makes for a fun dinner story!

  • Distance: 7km
  • Walk: ~4 Hours
  • Altitude: 4,470m
  • Accommodation: Teahouse

Day 08: Machhermo to Gokyo (4,750m) | 7km | 4hrs

This is the day you have been waiting for. The walk starts with a steady climb, and soon the valley opens up to reveal your first view of the Gokyo Lakes.
The first two lakes, Longponga Tsho and Taujung Tsho, sit below you like glowing blue jewels in the grey rocky land. Their bright turquoise color looks almost unreal. These lakes are sacred to both Hindus and Buddhists, so please treat them with respect.
You then walk along the shore of the third and largest lake to reach Gokyo village. Just west of the village lies the huge Ngozumpa Glacier, the largest in Nepal. Sleep well tonight, because tomorrow is the biggest morning of your trek!

Day 09: Morning Hike to Gokyo Ri (5,357m) & Trek Down to Machhermo (4,470m) |11km | 6hrs

Wake up before sunrise for the climb to Gokyo Ri. The trail is steep and takes about two hours. Walk slowly, breathe deeply, and rest when you need to.
At the top, you get one of the greatest views on Earth. As the sun rises and fills the sky with golden light, you can see four of the world’s six highest mountains at once: Everest, Lhotse, Makalu, and Cho Oyu. Below you shine the five Gokyo Lakes and the huge Ngozumpa Glacier. Many trekkers call this the best view in the Himalayas.
After photos, you head back down to Gokyo for breakfast, then continue the long walk down to Machhermo.

  • Walk: ~6 Hours
  • Max Altitude: 5,357m (Gokyo Ri)

Day 10: Machhermo to Namche Bazaar (3,440m) | 10km | 7hrs

Today is a long day, but most of it is downhill. As you lose height, your body will feel much better. Breathing gets easier, the air gets warmer, and your energy comes back.
The trail takes you south through Dole, Phortse Thanga, and Mong La, following the same path you walked on the way up. Even so, the views look different going the other way, and you will notice things you missed before. The rhododendron forests return and birds sing again as you drop lower.
Start early and keep a steady pace. Walking back into busy Namche Bazaar feels like reaching a big city. Celebrate with a hot meal and a warm shower!

  • Distance: 10km
  • Walk: ~7 Hours
  • Altitude: 3,440m
  • Accommodation: Teahouse
  • Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner
Day 11: Namche Bazaar to Lukla (2,860m) | 19km | 7hrs

This is your last full day of trekking, and it is a long one. The trail covers about 19 kilometers, so start early. Most of it is downhill or flat, which is easy on your lungs but hard on your knees. Trekking poles help a lot today.
You walk back down through green forests beside the rushing Dudh Koshi River and cross the same swinging bridges from the start. This time they feel much easier because you now have strong mountain legs! You pass through Phakding, where you spent your first night.
From there, the trail climbs gently to Lukla. Tonight, your guide arranges a small celebration dinner with your trekking crew.

  • Distance: 19km
  • Walk: ~7 Hours
  • Altitude: 2,860m
  • Accommodation: Teahouse
  • Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner
Day 12: Fly from Lukla to Kathmandu (1,324m) | 134km | 40min Flight

After breakfast, you head to Lukla airport for your short flight back to Kathmandu. The flight takes about 35 to 40 minutes and gives you one last beautiful view of the Himalayan peaks from the air. It is a lovely way to say goodbye to the mountains.
Back in Kathmandu, the city feels warm, loud, and full of life after so many quiet days in the hills. A Himalaya Hub team member meets you at the airport and drives you to your hotel.
The rest of the day is free. You can shop for souvenirs in Thamel, enjoy a relaxing massage, or sit at a rooftop restaurant and think about your amazing journey.

  • Distance: Fly 134km

  •  Breakfast,Lunch,Dinner
  •  Guesthouse
  •  3,441m

Today we start from Namche Bazaar on a trail with gradual ups and downs. We might be able to witness Himalayan pheasants, musk deer, and Himalayan Thars on the way. Our trek then enters the Gokyo Valley at Sansa. The trail climbs through rhododendron forest and comes to a point where, for the first time, we will be able to see Mt. Cho Oyu (8,201 m/26,907 ft) at the head of the valley. The route now makes twisting ascents through woodland, climbs more steeply into the open, crosses a number of streams, traverses a yak pasture with a solitary herder’s hut, crosses a minor ridge, and enters our overnight stop, the lodge settlement of Dole. Dole began as a kharka (a yak pasture) with a few herders’ huts, but once Gokyo became a trekking destination, lodges soon established themselves more rapidly.
  •  Breakfast,Lunch,Dinner
  •  Guesthouse
  •  3,680m

Today's trek is a short and pleasant one, and we can relax and take things easy. Because of the demands of altitude acclimatization, we do not go further. Beyond the first of Dole’s lodges, the trail goes downhill, crosses a stream, swings right to climb a hillside, and crosses pastureland with dry stone walls and several yak herders’ huts. The trail continues past a few stone-built huts and contours along the hillside, descends into a small basin with more walls, stone huts, and lodges, and then, just under two hours from Dole, reaches Luza (4,360 m/14,305 ft), which is also a kharka (yak pasture). Because the lodges at Dole and Machhermo can be very busy in the autumn trekking season, it has become a possible site for overnight accommodation. From Luza, the path climbs out of the northern side of the basin and crosses more pastureland bordered by a chorten and prayer flags. In every direction, the views are spectacular. Eventually the trail slopes down into the valley, crosses a stream, and rises up a short slope into the yak pastures and lodges of our overnight stop in Machhermo.
  •  Breakfast,lunch,Dinner
  •  Guesthouse
  •  3,870m

Today will be another relatively short trek across broad pastures, through narrow clefts with steeply climbing trails, past two or three lakes, and through an ablation valley beside the Ngozumpa Glacier. An ablation valley is one formed by the melting of glacier ice. The trail climbs around a hillside spur, where lofty Cho Oyu will again come into view, and soon we will reach another kharka with some simple lodges. Directly ahead of us at this point, we will see the terminal moraine (ridge of rocks) that closes off the Ngozumpa Glacier. The trail now goes briefly downhill, then climbs through the aforementioned ablation valley on the western side of the glacier, goes steeply up stone steps, and crosses a stream on a short wooden bridge. A succession of cairns now marks the route through a stony landscape, with a small tarn (Mountain Lake) on the left. The valley now broadens, and the trail reaches a second, larger tarn, Taboche Tsho (4,740 m/15,552 ft). Beyond this point, the trail passes through a narrower section of the ablation valley and comes to a third tarn, Dudh Pokhari (4,750 m/15,584 ft), with prayer flags on its eastern shore. Dudh Pokhari celebrates a fair every year during Janaipoornima, a popular Hindu festival that falls in July–August. Just beyond this lake, we will come to our overnight stop in Gokyo.
  •  Breakfast,lunch,Dinner
  •  Guesthouse
  •  4,800m

Early morning, we climb the hill Gokyo Ri (5,360m/17,586ft). The summit is marked by large cairns and prayer flags with a great panorama of mountains above and lakes and glaciers below. After viewing the lake and panoramic mountain for some time, return to Gokyo for breakfast, then to Machhermo.
  •  Breakfast,lunch,Dinner
  •  Guesthouse
  •  3,870m

After an early breakfast, head on towards Namche Bazaar. Namche feels quite lively and busy after the quiet of the smaller villages, and we spend the night of the trek here.
  •  Breakfast,Lunch,Dinner
  •  Guesthouse
  •  3,441m

We begin our trek to Lukla today on a rocky terrain. pass by several monasteries and villages before reaching Lukla. After reaching Lukla we spend the rest of the day resting as today will be our last day on the mountains. Overnight in Lukla.

Incredible Gokyo Ri Sunrise Trek in Nepal

The sunrise from Gokyo Ri at 5,357m was the most incredible thing I have ever witnessed. Everest at 8,849m glowing pink and orange while the lakes below reflected the morning light. Our guide cheered when we reached the top and that made us all cheer too. Himalaya Hub is a professional trekking company and their early morning summit timing was perfect. The Gokyo Valley Trek Nepal is the best viewpoint of Everest in my opinion. Knowledgeable guides and porters all the way.

Beautiful Dudh Pokhari Gokyo Lake Trek

Dudh Pokhari the third and largest Gokyo Lake at 4,750m was the most beautiful thing I have ever seen. The turquoise water with Cho Oyu towering behind it looked like a painting. Our guide sat with us on the shore for a long time and nobody said a word. It was that powerful. Himalaya Hub is one of the best trekking agencies in Nepal and their route through all six lakes was perfectly timed. The Gokyo Lake Trek is a sacred and stunning journey. Great service from start to finish.

Peaceful Alternative to Everest Base Camp Trek

I chose the Gokyo Valley Trek because I wanted to see Everest without the crowds. Best decision ever. We met maybe ten other trekkers the whole route. Our guide loved the quiet as much as we did. Himalaya Hub is a great local trekking operator. Best alternative Everest trek Nepal. Safe and well organized.
