5 Days Annapurna Base Camp Trek Itinerary

Day 01: Drive from Pokhara to Siwai (1,530m) – Trek to Sinuwa (2,360m) – 60km Trek – ~7hrs

Your Annapurna Base Camp adventure starts early in the morning from Pokhara. We will drive through beautiful countryside roads, passing small villages and green rice fields. The drive takes about 2 hours to reach Siwai, which is our trek starting point.
From Siwai, we start trekking uphill through local villages and forest trails. The path goes through Chhomrong village, which is a big Gurung settlement with amazing mountain views. You will see Annapurna South and Machhapuchhre (Fishtail Mountain) from here. After crossing the Chhomrong Khola river on a suspension bridge, we climb stone steps to reach Sinuwa.
Sinuwa is a small village surrounded by rhododendron and bamboo forests. This is where we stay for the night. The tea house is simple but comfortable, and you can enjoy a hot meal after your first day of trekking.

  • Distance: 10km trek, 50km drive
  • Walk/Drive: 5 hours trek, 2 hours drive
  • Altitude: 2,360m
  • Accommodation: Teahouse
  • Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner
Day 02: Trek from Sinuwa to Deurali (3,200m) – 11km – ~6hrs

Today we trek deeper into the Annapurna Sanctuary. The trail goes through thick bamboo and rhododendron forests. You might see colorful birds and maybe some monkeys along the way. The path is mostly uphill but not too difficult if you walk slowly.
We pass through Bamboo village and then Doban before reaching Himalaya Hotel. After this point, the forest becomes denser and the mountains feel closer. The trail passes through an area where avalanches can happen in winter, but it is completely safe during the main trekking seasons. You will cross several small streams on wooden bridges.
By afternoon, we reach Deurali, which sits at 3,200 meters. From here, you can see snow-covered peaks all around. The temperature drops as we are getting higher, so make sure to wear warm clothes. Tonight you will sleep at a higher altitude, so drink plenty of water.

  • Distance: 11km
  • Walk/Drive: 6 hours trek
  • Altitude: 3,200m
  • Accommodation: Teahouse
  • Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner
Day 03: Trek from Deurali to Annapurna Base Camp (4,130m) – 7.7km – ~6hrs

This is the most exciting day of your trek. We start early after breakfast and head towards Machhapuchhre Base Camp first. The landscape changes completely as we leave the tree line behind. Now you walk on rocky paths with giant mountains surrounding you on all sides.
After reaching Machhapuchhre Base Camp at 3,700 meters, we take a short rest and continue to Annapurna Base Camp. The final section takes about 2 hours. With every step, the mountains get bigger and closer. When you finally arrive at Annapurna Base Camp, you will be standing in a natural amphitheater surrounded by massive Himalayan peaks.
Annapurna I, Annapurna South, Hiunchuli, and Machhapuchhre tower above you. The views are absolutely stunning. If the weather is clear, you can watch the sunset painting the mountains gold and pink. This is the highlight of your entire journey. Tonight you sleep at the base camp, which is the highest point of this trek.

  • Distance: 7.7km
  • Walk/Drive: 6 hours trek
  • Altitude: 4,130m
  • Accommodation: Teahouse
  • Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner
Day 04: Trek Down from Annapurna Base Camp to Sinuwa (2,360m) – 19km – ~7hrs

Wake up very early to see the sunrise at Annapurna Base Camp. The morning light on the mountains is magical and perfect for taking photos. After breakfast, we start our long descent back down the valley. Going downhill is easier on your lungs but harder on your knees, so use your trekking poles.
We retrace our steps through Machhapuchhre Base Camp and Deurali. The path goes down through Himalaya Hotel and Doban. Since we are going downhill, we cover distance much faster than when we were climbing up. You will notice the air getting warmer and thicker as we lose altitude.
By late afternoon, we arrive back at Sinuwa where we stayed on the first night. Your legs might feel tired from the long downhill walk, but you will feel proud of reaching the base camp. Tonight you can rest well and celebrate your achievement with your trekking team.

  • Distance: 19km
  • Walk/Drive: 7 hours trek
  • Altitude: 2,360m
  • Accommodation: Teahouse
  • Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner
Day 05: Trek from Sinuwa to Jhinu Danda (1,780m) – Drive to Pokhara (822m) – 67km – ~8hrs

This is the last day of your trek. After breakfast, we descend from Sinuwa through the beautiful forest trail. The path goes down to Chhomrong Khola and then climbs a little to reach Jhinu Danda. This village is famous for its natural hot springs where you can relax your tired muscles.
If time allows, you can walk down to the hot springs and take a bath in the warm natural pools. It feels amazing after days of trekking in the mountains. After refreshing yourself, we meet our vehicle at Jhinu Danda and start the drive back to Pokhara.
The drive takes about 4 hours on a scenic mountain road. You will arrive in Pokhara by late afternoon or early evening. From here, you can rest at your hotel, enjoy a nice meal at a lakeside restaurant, and share your trekking stories. Your 5-day Annapurna Base Camp Trek adventure ends here with wonderful memories.

  • Distance: 12km trek, 55km drive
  • Walk/Drive: 4 hours trek, 4 hours drive
  • Altitude: 822m (Pokhara)

Foods on the 5 Days Annapurna Base Camp Trek

Dining during the short Annapurna Base Camp trek is a delightful mix of hearty Nepali cuisine and trekker-friendly options. Teahouses along the route provide nutritious meals to fuel your journey. Here’s what to expect:

Typical Meals

  • Breakfast: Options include porridge (oats or cornmeal), Tibetan bread with honey or jam, pancakes, eggs (fried or boiled), and tea or coffee. Perfect for energizing your 5 days ABC trek.
  • Lunch: Dal Bhat (lentil soup with rice, vegetables, and pickle) is a trekker’s staple, offering protein and carbs. Alternatives include fried rice, noodles, or momos (Nepali dumplings).
  • Dinner: Similar to lunch, with added variety like pasta, pizza (basic versions), or vegetable curry with chapati. Warm soups are popular to combat the chilly nights at higher altitudes.
  • Snacks: Bring energy bars, nuts, or chocolate from Pokhara, as teahouse snacks (e.g., biscuits, instant noodles) are pricier higher up.

Dietary Notes

  • Vegetarian-Friendly: Most dishes can be adapted for vegetarians.
  • Hydration: Hot tea, ginger lemon honey, and boiled water (bring purification tablets) keep you hydrated.
  • Cost: Meals are included in the package ($500-$600), but extras like meat dishes or bottled drinks cost $2-$5 each, increasing with altitude.

The food keeps you fueled for the short Annapurna Base Camp trekking challenge while offering a taste of Nepali hospitality.

  • Heating: Common dining areas have wood stoves, great for warming up after a day on the shortest route to Annapurna Base Camp.
  • Locations: Overnight stays in Ghandruk, Chhomrong, Himalaya Hotel, ABC, Bamboo, and Jhinu Danda, all included in the package.

Expect rustic charm over luxury. Teahouses get simpler as you ascend, with ABC offering the most basic setup (think cold nights and shared facilities). The focus is on rest and recovery for the next leg of your ABC short trek.

Health & Safety Tips for the 5 Days Annapurna Base Camp Trek

When trekking in high-altitude areas like Annapurna Base Camp, it’s important to prioritize your health and safety. The Annapurna region, while offering spectacular views, also presents challenges such as altitude sickness and varying weather conditions. Here are some essential tips to help you stay safe and enjoy your trek:

 Altitude Sickness: Understanding and Prevention

Altitude sickness, or Acute Mountain Sickness (AMS), can affect trekkers who ascend too quickly to higher elevations. Symptoms can include headaches, dizziness, nausea, and difficulty sleeping. To minimize the risk:

  • Ascend Gradually: The key to avoiding altitude sickness is a gradual ascent. The 5 Days Annapurna Base Camp Trek is designed with adequate rest periods to allow for proper acclimatization. However, listen to your body and don’t rush.
  • Take Rest Days: While this is a short trek, it’s essential to include rest days when trekking at high altitudes. Plan short days and breaks to ensure your body can adjust to the thinner air.
  • Stay Hydrated: Drink plenty of fluids throughout the trek. Hydration helps your body adjust to the altitude and prevents dehydration, which can exacerbate AMS symptoms. Aim for at least 3-4 liters of water per day.
  • Avoid Alcohol: Alcohol can contribute to dehydration and impede your body’s ability to adjust to the altitude. It’s best to avoid drinking while trekking.
  • Recognize Symptoms Early: Familiarize yourself with the early symptoms of altitude sickness, which include:
    • Headache
    • Nausea or vomiting
    • Dizziness
    • Fatigue
    • Loss of appetite

If you experience any of these symptoms, inform your guide immediately and rest. If symptoms worsen, it may be necessary to descend to a lower altitude.

Staying Hydrated

Hydration is crucial, not just for combating altitude sickness but also for your overall well-being during the trek.

  • Carry a Water Bottle: Always carry a reusable water bottle and refill it along the trek. Many teahouses along the Annapurna Base Camp route offer purified water or boiled water that you can use to fill your bottle.
  • Water Purification: If you’re concerned about water quality, consider carrying a water filter or purification tablets. This will ensure you have access to clean drinking water throughout the trek.
  • Electrolyte Balance: Sometimes water alone isn’t enough. Consider carrying electrolyte tablets or hydration powder to help maintain your salt and mineral balance, especially if you’re sweating heavily.

Proper Nutrition and Food Intake

Trekking at high altitudes requires more energy than regular hiking, so eating properly is essential to sustain your energy levels:

  • Eat Regularly: Make sure to eat regularly to keep your energy levels high. Breakfasts often include oatmeal, eggs, bread, or pancakes, while dinners feature dal bhat (lentil soup), pasta, and rice dishes. These meals provide the necessary carbohydrates, proteins, and fats for sustained energy.
  • Snacks: Carry energy snacks like nuts, energy bars, chocolate, or dried fruit to snack on during the trek.
  • Light Meals: Eat light but frequent meals to avoid feeling too full or sluggish, especially at higher altitudes where digestion can be slower.

Weather Awareness

The weather in the Annapurna region can change rapidly, and it’s essential to be prepared for all conditions.

  • Layer Your Clothing: The weather can be unpredictable, so always dress in layers. Use moisture-wicking fabrics for your base layer, followed by an insulating layer, and then a waterproof jacket as an outer layer.
  • Be Prepared for Cold: Even in the lower altitudes, temperatures can drop significantly in the evenings and mornings. Make sure to pack warm clothing, especially if you’re trekking in winter (December to February).
  • Rain and Snow: If trekking in the rainy season (June to September) or winter, make sure to bring waterproof gear and be prepared for possible snowfall or rain. Trekking poles can also provide stability in slippery conditions.

Physical Fitness and Preparation

To enjoy the trek and reduce the risk of injury, physical fitness is important:

  • Train Before the Trek: While the 5 Days Annapurna Base Camp Trek is moderate in difficulty, it’s still important to train. Cardiovascular exercises (like running, cycling, or brisk walking) and leg strengthening exercises (like squats and lunges) will help improve your stamina and endurance for uphill climbs.
  • Stretch and Warm-Up: Before each day’s trek, warm up and stretch your muscles to avoid injuries. Simple stretches can help keep your legs and back loose, especially before long climbs.
  • Rest and Listen to Your Body: Don’t overexert yourself. If you’re tired, take a break. It’s important to keep a comfortable pace and listen to your body throughout the trek.

Trekking with a Guide and Porter

For added safety, it’s always best to trek with an experienced guide and porter, especially if you’re new to the region or trekking in Nepal:

  • Guides: An experienced guide can help navigate the route, offer valuable insights into the local culture, and provide first aid if necessary.
  • Porters: Hiring a porter will help reduce your load and allow you to focus on the trek itself. This also contributes to the local economy and ensures a more comfortable experience.

ABC with Kumar

Our trekking to the Annapurna Base Camp was an amazing experience, and our guide Kumar made it even better. He had everything settled for us, so we could focus in walking and enjoying the beautiful sights. Accommodation, permits, he took our food orders and brought our food in the guesthouses, he made sure our water bottles were always full and that we had enough blankets at night, he even helped us carry one of our bags and taught us a nepalese to trekking song. He was also very knowledgable about the area and explained the route we took every day preparing us for the daily challenge. We will definitely return and trek with him again, next time Everest Base Camp.

Annapurna Base Camp trekking

I did the trekking to Poon Hill and Annapurna Base Camp with Sandip as my guide. The initial plan was to go to Everest, but due to issues with the flights we decided to go to Annapurna instead. Sandip and his colleagues had the Annapurna plan worked out in minutes (permits, hotel, transport, etc). I was very pleased with their flexibility to quickly work out an alternative plan for me. The trekking itself was wonderful. Sandip is a young, fun guide who does his work very well. I hope to do another trekking with Sandip in the future, and then maybe we can record more Tiktok videos :)
