Ancient Trade Route With Fascinating History

Upper Mustang was a crucial trade route between Tibet and India for centuries and walking this ancient path felt like traveling through living history. Salt from Tibetan lakes was traded for grain from Nepal's lowlands. Kagbeni at 2,810m was the gateway checkpoint. Lo Manthang at 3,810m was the royal trading capital. Guide Dorje shared fascinating stories of caravans, merchants, and the kingdom's strategic importance. The isolation preserved the culture and architecture perfectly. Himalaya Hub's historical knowledge enriched every village. Perfect trek combining adventure, culture, and history. Absolutely loved it!

Perfect Trek for Himalayan Photography

As a photographer, Upper Mustang delivered endless spectacular subjects. The walled city of Lo Manthang at 3,810m with Nilgiri backdrop. Colorful wind-eroded cliffs and desert formations. Ancient monasteries with prayer flags against barren mountains. Tibetan villagers in traditional dress. The longest mani wall at Ghami. Sky caves dotting vertical cliffs. November light was crisp and perfect with clear skies daily. Guide Mingma understood my photography needs and knew every viewpoint. Himalaya Hub created a photographer-friendly schedule with early starts. Every frame was stunning. Essential trek for serious landscape photographers!

Tiji Festival Was Spectacular Cultural Experience

We timed our Upper Mustang trek specifically for Tiji Festival in Lo Manthang and it was absolutely spectacular. Three days of colorful masked dances, monk ceremonies, and ancient rituals performed in the walled city square at 3,810m with locals in traditional dress. The spiritual celebration of good triumphing over evil brought the entire community together. Guide Karma explained every ritual's significance beautifully. Witnessing this living tradition in the medieval city setting was profoundly moving. Himalaya Hub planned perfect festival timing and secured great viewing positions. Cultural experience of a lifetime!

Ancient Sky Caves Were Mind-Blowing

The ancient sky caves carved into vertical cliffs near Chhoser were absolutely mind-blowing. Thousands of caves stacked hundreds of feet up sheer rock faces - archaeologists still don't fully understand how they were built or accessed. Some were monasteries, some storage, some dwellings dating back over 2,000 years. Guide Lakpa arranged climbing into several accessible caves with incredible views over the desert valley. The mystery and scale was breathtaking. Lo Manthang at 3,810m was equally fascinating. Himalaya Hub's adventurous itinerary included cave exploration perfectly. Best archaeological trek experience anywhere!

Royal Palace Visit Was Once-in-Lifetime

Visiting the Royal Palace in Lo Manthang at 3,810m was a once-in-a-lifetime privilege. The former King's residence sits in the center of the walled city and guide Tenzing arranged a special visit. We explored the prayer room, saw ancient thangkas, and learned about Mustang's royal lineage dating back centuries. The Kingdom only officially ended in 2008 so the culture feels very much alive. The longest mani wall at Ghami at 3,520m was also spectacular. Himalaya Hub's connections enabled these special cultural accesses. Incredible living history experience. Highly recommend!
