Frequently asked questions

The best time to trek the Tsum Valley & Manaslu Circuit is during the autumn (September to November) and spring (March to May) seasons. These months offer clear skies, moderate temperatures, and stunning mountain views. Winter months (December to February) can be extremely cold, while the monsoon season (June to August) brings heavy rainfall and challenging trail conditions.

The Tsum Valley & Manaslu Circuit Trek is considered a moderately difficult trek, requiring a good level of physical fitness and prior trekking experience. The route involves several days of walking at high altitudes, with a maximum elevation of 5,160 meters (Larkya La Pass). Proper acclimatization and preparation are essential to handle the altitude and terrain.

While it is possible to trek independently in some regions of Nepal, hiring a guide and porter for the Tsum Valley & Manaslu Circuit Trek is strongly recommended. The region is remote and requires special permits. A guide will ensure safety, provide local insights, and help with the logistical aspects of the trek. Porters can assist in carrying your gear, making the journey more comfortable.

The highest point of the trek is Larkya La Pass (5,160 meters). At this altitude, there is a risk of altitude sickness (AMS), especially if you ascend too quickly. To minimize the risk, the trek includes acclimatization days, such as the rest day in Samagaon. Proper hydration, a gradual ascent, and listening to your body’s signals are crucial for a safe trek.

Accommodation along the Tsum Valley & Manaslu Circuit is typically in teahouses/guesthouses. These simple, family-run lodges provide basic amenities, such as beds, blankets, and shared bathrooms. The rooms are usually clean and comfortable, though more luxurious options are limited in the remote areas. Booking a guide and porter often ensures you get the best available guesthouses.

Packing for the trek requires careful consideration of the varying climate and altitudes. Essential items include:

  • Warm clothing (layers, down jacket)
  • Trekking boots
  • Sleeping bag (available for rent)
  • Sun protection (sunglasses, sunscreen, hat)
  • Waterproof gear (rain jacket, poncho)
  • Personal medications and first aid kit A detailed packing list will be provided upon booking.

Wi-Fi and mobile network service are available in some parts of the trek, particularly in larger villages like Samagaon and Namrung. However, the service is usually intermittent and slower than what you’d find in cities. It’s advisable to carry a local SIM card with data, but be prepared to be offline for long stretches of the trek.

To prepare, engage in physical training focusing on endurance, strength, and cardio. Practice walking long distances with a backpack to simulate the trekking conditions. It’s also important to acclimatize properly by ascending gradually and resting on acclimatization days. Consult your doctor for a health check-up and make sure you have proper travel insurance.

The cost of the trek starts at around $1130 USD per person for an 18-day trek. This includes transportation, guide, permits, accommodation with breakfast, and some gear (sleeping bag and down jacket). Additional costs not included are lunch, dinner, porter fees ($20 USD/day), personal expenses, and travel insurance. Ensure you budget for these extra expenses accordingly.

Manaslu circuit + Tsum valley

Recently trekked the above routes with this company. Our guides were a lot of fun. We enjoyed plenty of spontaneous activities along the trek including dancing to the beat of a drum, karate, snow-ball fights, and more. They were always willing to introduce to local cuisine, be it ABC package noodles, Thentuk, Millet wine, and the many variations of Dhal Bhat. They were incredibly helpful in negotiating our dietary requirements with the tea-house owners. Always willing to take photos and accommodate our requests for changes in schedule and stops along the way. The route we chose was mind-blowing in terms of scenery, abundance of wildlife, and friendly locals. Would highly recommend both the company and the Manalsu/Tsum valley treks.

Manaslu + Tsum Valley + Babu (our guide) = Best 19 days ever!

In May, my husband and I were finishing a 6 month trip around the world with 1 month in Nepal. We had no plans when we arrived, just an idea that we wanted to go to Mansalu; but we had heard it had suffered significant damage from the 2015 quake and weren't sure if we were going to be able to make it happen. When we arrived in Kathmandu, we decided to go with Himalaya Hub because they had amazing reviews and were the most honest and personable organizer we met with. They made us feel cared for and didn't make us feel like just another sale...And arranged our journey in less than 36 hours! First, a bit about our guide, the wonderful and kind Babu. By the end of the trip, Babu was more than a guide, he became our friend. Not only did he educate us on the terrain, the names of the glorious peaks, and the animals along the way, but he introduced us to the local people...something that was very important to us because unlike other countries, when you trek in Nepal, you stay in people's homes. Very special people's homes. Babu helped us build a meaningful connection to the community in each village we stayed. In one location, Babu helped us buy potatoes from a local village woman and convinced the tea house owner to let us cook our own food, because my husband likes to cook (lets just say the locals can cook their food way better than we can!). In another case, we sat with Babu in the house kitchen and dined on freshly made momos made by Dai Chen, the "woman of the house." We sat drinking Yak tea (yuck) for an hour, learning what it's like to live so far up (3700 m) in the mountains, how to raise a family there, etc. In another case, Babu helped us literally catch a chicken (aka run around a village looking like a chicken with its head cut off) for dinner, the day after the pass. There were countless experiences that Babu gave us that made our journey that much more personal, meaningful, memorable, forever. He played cards with us. He made us laugh. He took us to the best tea houses to stay in. He made sure we were always comfortable and happy. He picked berries for us to eat (safe berries..the yellow looking rasberry ones - yum!). Babu is simply THE BEST and everyone should request that he be their guide. You won't regret it! Second, a bit about the journey. Going to Manaslu and Tsum Valley was amazing. From what we understood, there was a lot of damage from the quake, and some was still visible. But the Manaslu trek is definitely open and I highly recommend it, especially with the Tsum addition. Less people I think are traveling here, which is unfortunate because it is so beautiful. But it's definitely not for the faint of heart....be prepared to walk long distances. Tsum Valley is a really special place because the Buddhists there still feel very much attached to Tibet and speak their own language unlike other Buddhists throughout the country. It's like this little magical valley the world forgot about - there are no roads connecting to it...just green fields of wheat (or I guess yellow depending on the season) surrounded by massive peaks. At the top lies an amazing monastery with lovely monks - 1 who is over 70! And there is an amazing nunnery, where many of the women taught themselves English. Manaslu is also amazing. We stayed our first night at the owner's in laws house, which was a lovely experience. In general though, the tea houses are very nice on this trek, many recently rebuilt after the quake. The Larke pass is beautiful. We were "fortunate" to have a snow storm right when we arrived to the camp before the pass (Dharmasala) so everything had a fresh coat of snow on it. But the views are fantastic. The only downside of Manaslu is when you meet up with the Annapurna trek, which only reaffirms why you should pass on that trek and opt for something off the beaten path (literally). Bottom line, you can't go wrong with Manaslu, Tsum, Himalaya Hub, and most definitely not Babu!

Tsum Valley and the Manaslu Circuit Trek

What a journey. 18 days through Tsum Valley and the Manaslu Circuit and I feel like a different person. The culture in Tsum is unlike anything else in Nepal, old and quiet and honest. Our guide was full of stories about the villages and made every rest stop interesting. Himalaya Hub is a really experienced trekking company and their local knowledge is incredible. Mu Gompa at 3,700m on a clear morning is one of the most beautiful things I have ever seen. Book with them seriously. One of the best trekking agencies in Nepal.
