Nagarjun (Jamacho) Hill offers a quick nature escape from Kathmandu. Its trailhead lies only 8–10 km from the city center. The trek follows a clearly marked path through the lush “Queen’s Forest” of Shivapuri-Nagarjun National Park. Jamacho Gumba (a small Buddhist monastery) sits at the 2,128 m summit. From here, hikers enjoy sweeping 360° panoramas of Kathmandu Valley and snow-capped Himalayan peaks.
Shivapuri-Nagarjun National Park protects the Nagarjun hills and was formed by merging the Nagarjun Forest into Shivapuri NP in 2009. The Nepalese Army guards this pristine reserve, which harbors diverse wildlife. Trekkers may encounter Himalayan black bears, leopards, jungle cats, and rhesus monkeys in the forests. The park is also a birdwatcher’s haven, home to 177 bird species and 102 butterfly species. These forested slopes supply much of Kathmandu’s drinking water, underscoring the park’s importance to the region.
The day-hike route begins at Fulbari Gate (Balaju) in Shivapuri-Nagarjun NP. From the gate, a stone stairway trail climbs steadily through the shaded Rani Ban (Queen’s Forest) of pines, oak,s and flowering rhododendrons. The one-way distance to Jamacho Gumba is about 5 km. Signposts and stone steps guide hikers all the way up to the 2,128 m summit, and then back to the gate. The trail is simple and linear, so it’s hard to get lost as long as you follow the forest path.
The full trek is roughly 10 km round-trip with about 800 m of elevation gain. Fit hikers can ascend to Jamacho in approximately 3–4 hours and descend in 2–3 hours. The trail grade is easy-to-moderate: the path is mostly well-maintained and stone-paved. Guides emphasize that no previous trekking experience is needed, making it suitable for beginners and families. In fact, one tour operator notes that anyone with good fitness can complete this hike (typically 4–5 hours total).
The prime seasons are Autumn (Sept–Nov) and Spring (Mar–May). These months bring dry weather, clear skies, and mild daytime temperatures. In autumn, the air is crisp, and the sky is often clear, offering excellent mountain visibility; rhododendrons and wildflowers are in bloom along the trail. Spring also provides pleasant weather and lush greenery. By contrast, summer’s monsoon (June–August) brings heavy rains and slippery trails, so it is generally avoided. Winter (Dec–Feb) can still be a good time – skies are clear, and views of Kathmandu and the snow-capped hills are sharp – but it will be colder at altitude. Overall, spring and autumn yield the safest and most rewarding conditions for this day hike.

Along the way (and at the summit), colorful Buddhist prayer wheels and flags enhance the experience. Jamacho Gumba monastery (a modest Tibetan-style shrine) crowns the hike, offering a calm spiritual atmosphere.
At the summit, our guests enjoy unparalleled Himalayan panoramas. Kathmandu Valley sprawls below, and distant peaks line the horizon.
