Tibet, region of Asia, lies on the vast Tibetan Plateau north of the Himalayas, bordered by China, India, Nepal, and Bhutan. Long recognized for its unique cultural identity and spiritual traditions, Tibet became an autonomous region of the People’s Republic of China in 1951 following centuries of religious governance and intermittent independence. Despite its rugged terrain and relatively sparse population, Tibet is one of the highest inhabited regions on Earth, often referred to as the “Roof of the World.” The origin of the name “Tibet” is uncertain, though it is believed to have come from Arabic or Turkic sources, while the native name for the land is “Bod.” Tibet is internationally known for its remote mountain landscapes, sacred monasteries, and deep-rooted Buddhist culture. Pilgrimage sites such as Jokhang Temple and Mount Kailash, along with landmarks like the Potala Palace in Lhasa, attract spiritual seekers and travelers alike. The capital is Lhasa.
